Metal Options for NYC Outdoor Dining Structures

Posted by Matt Hearn on

Outdoor dining in New York City is a permanent, regulated program, and the structures restaurants put on the sidewalk or in the roadway have to meet the city's rules. Those rules keep changing. In 2026 the city added a year-round option for roadway cafes alongside the seasonal one. So the first step on any project is to check the current requirements with NYC DOT's Dining Out NYC program. This article covers the part we know best: the metal.

Design for assembly and removal

City rules have favored setups that are open, lightweight and removable over the enclosed sheds of 2020, and nothing can be permanently fixed to the street or sidewalk. Whatever the current details, a structure that bolts together in sections is easier to install, store and repair. We design frames as modules that two people can carry, with hardware that survives being taken apart and put back together.

Steel or aluminum

  • Steel is strong, economical and easy to weld. It is heavy, and it must be galvanized or powder coated to live outdoors.
  • Aluminum is about a third of the weight and does not rust, which matters for anything that gets moved. It costs more per pound and needs more section to match steel's stiffness.
  • Stainless steel is the premium choice for rails, counters and hardware that guests touch.

Finishes that survive the street

Road salt, rain, delivery carts and power washing are hard on a finish. Hot-dip galvanizing protects steel inside and out. Powder coat over galvanizing gives color and a second layer of protection. Bare or painted mild steel will rust at every scratch.

Details worth drawing early

  • Planter and barrier attachment points
  • Leveling feet for crowned roads and sloped sidewalks
  • Mounts for lighting, heaters and signage
  • Drainage paths so water is not trapped under platforms
  • Lifting and carrying points for removal and storage

What to bring to a fabricator

Your approved or draft site plan, the dimensions the city allows for your location, photos of the curb and sidewalk, whether your license is seasonal or year-round, and where the structure will be stored if it has to come down. We build to the dimensions and requirements your approved plan gives us, and detail a structure that comes apart cleanly.

Send your plan through the quote form for a price in 24 to 48 hours. Related: tube laser cutting, powder coating and finishes and on-site installation.
